Congrats! It is a great workhorse. Mine served me dutifully for 5 years and 138,800 km.

Though it had not much reliability issues for me, do watch out on 2 parts that potentially prone to fail. Water pump for engine and the AL4 gearbox.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep a look out for these 2 whenever I send the car in for servicing. I'm still in Australia and won't be back till 28th morning. First thing I'll do is the rush down to Turf City from the airport to collect the car... Can't wait =)

Collected my 307SW last Wednesday morning. Very nice drive overall but after driving for a couple of days, I get a "gearbox fault" warning when I start the car. It goes away after restarting the car. Is it normal?

I just made an appointment with AF to get it checked... The dealer just sent the car in to AF 2 weeks ago for servicing (and had a receipt to show for that), so I hope it's not too serious...

Anyone else had similar experience?

You might want to see this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Experiences from Malaysian PUG owners on the AL4 transmission. Some goes away after flushing their ATF, while some involve changing the solenoid valves. What sort of mileage is your car? Perhaps can check with AF when was the last time of ATF change. It's about 200 bucks at AF/change. Hopefully, it's not something serious.

My then 2007 307SW also has this error which appears intermittently. The next symptom if appears is sudden jerky gear change. This is indication of the AL4 gearbox problem as mentioned by bro Ozzie.

Mileage was 130K km when it occurs.

Send to AF for diagnostics and they recommend a gearbox overhaul which is 8K. Did not do it but went to Thomas for a ATF change. Drove for another 100km and change ATF again. Repeat it once more. In total, 3 change of ATF. Rationale: Each drain does not drain out 100% of the ATF so a substantial amount remains in the gearbox. So by repeating the ATF replacement, the 'old' oil gets rejuvenated. Apparently, the errors and jerks went away.

While driving, observe if the sport & snow buttons on the gearbox are blinking, as that is a checking mechanism for atf change.

AF diagnosed that the gearbox was ok, but some 'multifunction switch' thingy was faulty and had to be replaced. The warnings have not appeared all day today... keeping fingers crossed...

Did you changed your ATF anyway? If not, do consider doing so.

Thanks.

It was the same for my pre-owned Citroen C4. The purchase price is really cheap but the 'resuscitation' cost is relatively high. The overall cost was $6000, including a gearbox overhaul, timing belt change, water pump change, etc. All in all, it is still a cheap buy as these costs were somehow used as bargaining chips in my purchase.

about 80K km after near 4.5 years but it has the usual AL4 symtoms (jerks, stradle to 'Neutral' when stop although in Drive, and suddenly went to gear when you release brake pedal and step on accelerator) when I test drive the car. Use that as a bargaining chip to axe off 5K from selling price which the direct seller obliged. The car was in a bad shape interior-wise due to poor cleaning and maintenance but almost all are reversible through some detailing work. The previous female owner (only 1 owner) neglected the car but she seems desperate to let go the car probably she has went to C&C for a quote on GB repair which usually starts from $8K.

Did the overhaul at Khangs Automatic in Sin Ming. The car went in for about 8 days of hospitalisation. The ATF change regime will not work as the symptoms indicate quite critical condition. Have all the wear-and-tear parts such as mounting changed in the process. Cost goes to about $4.5K including parts and labour.

Afterwhich, went to T&P for timing belt and water pump change, air-con filter change, coolant change, wheel bearing change, etc

All in all, including repair costs, paid $40000 for a Jan 2007 C4 but having most of the wear-and-tear parts replaced.

80K GB overhaul sounds a little too soon. I would expect gearbox to last 150K at least. If travel a fair bit to Malaysia, 80K km comes around in 2 to 3 years.

I heard of another GB repair centre in Pandan Loop. Seems cheaper than Khang. Friend did a Honda Ody $2.9K.

I think you are referring to Top Speed which also quoted me about the same price at Khang. Apparently, it is the make that determines the pricing.

Anyway, I reckon it boils down to maintenance of the vehicle. Also, I never trust the odometer for pre-owned car. It can be easily rigged even so, for digital ones.

You are right about the 150K mileage for GB. With proper maintenance such as regular changing of ATF, the lifespan can be prolonged. My previous 307SW (registered in May 2007) did 148K km when I traded it in. Its AL4 GB is still quite smooth.

Prevention is the best policy if you want to keep the vehicle for years.

I guess those of us who buy second hand cars should set aside some money for maintenance as part of the budget. The depreciation of mine works out to be $7k+ but I factored in about $2-3K for maintenance per year... so running cost (excluding tax and petrol) should be about $10k... still cheaper than maintaining a brand new... COE of $90K means depreciation of $9K per year at least... =P
