Dear all,

I need some comments on Peugeot 307 SW 2.0A registered in 2007.
Does this model has any gearbox problem?
Please advise.

Thanks.

Apart from buying new, if you are keen to get the 307SW, do read up more about the AL4 transminssion gearbox it has. This lengendary AL4 gearbox has loads of literature written about it. Other models using this are Pug 206, Citroen C4, etc.

Coincidentally, I have owned the Pug 206, currently owning the 307SW and Citroen C4. Frankly, I drove my 206 for 6 years till about 140K km. My current 307SW is over 5 years and have 140K km on it. My C4 is over 5 years and has 110K km. The pugs were with me since new. There were regularly serviced and gearbox oil is changed every 20K although Peugeot does not recommend any need to change the oil. Both cars did not show any sign of gear box problems.

For C4, I bought it 2nd hand at about 75K km and 4 years old. When I tested the car at the dealer, it shows the common AL4 gearbox problems - sudden clunking, sudden shifting into gears from stop, etc. I shave off 6K easily and bought the car cheap. An gearbox overhaul cost me about 5K. It has since served me well. Again, gearbox oil is changed every 20K km.

One easy way to check: Open the car door and windows, start the car. With the brake depressed and handbrake applied, engage the reverse gear from parking gear. Listen/Feel for a thud or clanking sound from the gearbox. If it is very audible or jerky, it is likely either gearbox mounting gone (cheap problem) or gearbox transmission problems (overhaul needed soon).

Mileage, age and service records play a part in gearbox wear.

Generally, I enjoy the rides of the 3 cars. All used cars will have some problems. It is how you manage/minimise the cost of purchasing it. Factor in some repair cost when purchasing a used car.

Sorry for long posting again. drunken

Hi Yodafia,

Thank you for the detailed information. It is very useful for someone that never own a Pug or Citron before. Really appreciate it.
