Default is off (after you off ignition).

Yes press down once is activate and I think the speedo screen does show a small icon of wiper.

The wipe once function is good for mist. Like in the morning the windscreen has dew and you need to wipe once to clear it.

Next is the rain sensor can only sense if got rain or no rain by comparing before and after the 1st wipe. The rain sensor is not a water sensor. It compares the light and reflection on the windscreen.

When car first on, the auto rain wiper is off by default, no way to activate it permanently (not light the auto light), as far as I know. Btw fog lamp also cannot permanently on...

Even no rain, it will wipe 1 time for confirmation (display also have confirmation message) when activated. To deactivate auto, have to put wipe function to manual (intermittent mode) once then put to off position.

The rain sensor will activate or adjust speed of the wiper based on your vehicle speed and environment light condition. The above was based on 5008, not sure other model will have any different or not.

spot on! auto rain wiper adjusts the speed of the wiping and is activated when you push down on the wiper stalk.
